Kirk (Jay Baruchel of Nick and Norah’s Infinite Playlist, Tropic Thunder, and Knocked Up) lives an ordinary life as an hourly unskilled worker at the airport. He has an obnoxious ex-girlfriend flaunting her new boyfriend, a crazy family that embarrasses and humiliates him, and three average-Joe friends who also work at the airport in various capacities.
When the highly educated, extremely successful, and exceptionally beautiful Molly (Alice Eve) seems interested in him romantically, Kirk (and everyone around him) doubts her sincerity because she’s clearly out of his league. As his friends never tire of telling him, she’s a hard 10 on the attractiveness scale and Kirk’s a mere 5.
Raunchy Comedy in She’s Out of My League
Despite their apparent differences, Molly enjoys Kirk’s company because he makes her laugh and poses little threat. He’s a safe and fun companion unlike the usual men she dates. Things go smoothly at first until Molly’s hunky ex-boyfriend (Geoff Stults) causes some trouble, and Kirk’s friends Stainer (T. J. Miller), Devon (Nate Torrence), and Jack (Mike Vogel) interfere with the relationship, including uncomfortable tips on personal grooming.
Much of the comedy jumps on the male crotch humor bandwagon ushered in by Judd Apatow and his gang. In this case, writers Sean Anders and John Morris ( Hot Tub Time Machine ) continue the tradition with often-hilarious gross-outs moments. A lively soundtrack of relevant songs punctuates poor Kirk’s plight throughout the movie.
She’s Out of My League DVD Bonus Features
Deleted Scenes: Includes “Real Crazy,” “Time Out,” “It’s Her Cat,” “3…2…” and an extended ending (a slightly longer airport scene). These deleted scenes don’t add much value to the package. Director Jim Field Smith wisely chose to cut them from the film and leave them as special features for the DVD instead.
Blooper Reel: This entertaining bonus includes variations on lines, mistakes in delivery, and lots of giggling from cast members. The reel contains some funny scenes worth watching a couple of times.
Devon’s Dating Show: Nate Torrence in his role as the sensitive guy, Devon, and Kyle Bornheimer as the vulgar loudmouth, Dylan, provide dating tips for guys from two very different perspectives. Funny and raunchy, yes, but in no way is this a seriously helpful guide.
Commentary by Director Jim Field Smith provides behind-the-scenes information about the making of the film.
